Bad Credit Can Hurt the Job Search: The Benefits of a Credit Consolidation Loan

More and more employers are requiring credit checks on potential employees. Unfortunately, bad credit can affect whether or not you are able to get more credit as well as a credible job. More employers are employing credit reports when they evaluate employees for a new job position, promotion or retention. Having bad credit may even cause you to lose your job. One way to make your bad credit look credible to an employer is by taking out a credit consolidation loan.

A credit consolidation loan will pay off your debts and relieve stress on you because you only have to make one payment and typically the interest rate is lower than what you were paying on credit cards, personal lines of credit, etc. The credit consolidation loan can show that you are taking responsibility for your bad debt and just because you have poor credit doesn't mean you are not an responsible person.

Another benefit of the credit consolidation loan is that it begins to build a consistent payment history on your credit. This is an excellent way to build up good credit. You may also be able to save even more on your interest rate by having the bank deduct the loan payment directly out of your checking or savings account. This shows an automatic good payment history on your credit report.

If you do find that you didn't receive a job because of bad credit, you can request a free copy of your credit report within sixty days of receiving notice that you did not get the job. The Fair Credit Reporting Act requires that the employer must obtain your permission prior to running a credit report. If you do not get the job, the employer is required to report and tell you how to get a copy of the report from the consumer reporting company.

The FCRA also requires that a free copy of your credit report is available to consumers every year. The report may still count as an inquiry on your credit, and as we all know inquiries are not great either, however, you are better off knowing what is on your credit report so you can be prepared to defend yourself for a job position or promotion if you are offered the chance. There are also rare occasions when your name may be the same as somebody else's and their bad debt ends up on your credit report. This can also be fixed.

The consumer reporting company is responsible for correcting inaccurate or incomplete information on your credit report. Disputing these errors and having them corrected may allow you to get a job that requires credit checks during your job search.
